Counselling

Our councelling serviceCancer can cause many different feelings which may be difficult to understand or to cope with: anger, fear, uncertainty, sadness, why me?

Talking with your partner, family, friends, doctor or nurse can be a great help, but it is often very helpful to talk to somebody else who understands your feelings and is trained to help you to deal with them in a positive way.

At Cancer Connections we have counsellors who have helped many other people affected by cancer.

We can arrange for you to talk with a counsellor to see how they may be able to help, and provide on going counselling if that is what you would like. You will be under no obligation if you change your mind.

If you would like to know more about our counselling service, telephone 0191 456 5081

It’s good to talk – especially if it’s cancer.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a form of psychotherapy. It is a process of discussion between a counsellor and an individual, a family or a group of people.

Firstly, there is a preliminary discussion that identifies the client’s problem or perceived problem. For people coming to Cancer Connections this will be the impact of the diagnosis of cancer, its treatment, its effect on their life and that of their family. It may take the form of anger, anxiety, despair, hopelessness, withdrawal. It may also be the difficulties experienced by someone caring for a family member with cancer.

By listening and questioning, always supportive, the counsellor helps the client to understand their situation, its background and their response to it. During further discussion the client is helped to address the debilitating response to the cancer and to develop, for themselves, practical or psychological mechanisms that help them cope with their situation.

All discussions between counsellors and their clients are confidential. Counsellors do not engage with people who have personality disorders or psychiatric illness. They do not prescribe any form of medication. They do not offer advice. Counsellors work to enable the client to help themselves through understanding and by providing support and encouragement.

All Cancer Connections counsellors are trained to national standards and have experience of helping people with cancer. They are registered members of one of the several national counselling organisations. Our counsellors keep records of the discussion with clients and when counselling is concluded these records are retained in a confidential and secure manner by Cancer Connections. Our counsellors also undergo regular monthly supervision with an independent experienced counsellor as is normal practice.
