Rachel Groombridge
A SELFLESS young woman who has battled brain cancer twice is an inspiration to others.
Rachel Groombridge was first diagnosed with brain cancer just days before her 18th birthday, and after six months of treatment she was given the all-clear.
However, two years later the cancer returned, and Miss Groombridge, from Wilton Gardens, Boldon Colliery, had a stem cell transplant, and needed further radiotherapy and chemotherapy until January last year.
During this time the 22-year-old became involved with Cancer Connections in Boldon Lane, South Shields.
She started doing voluntary work in the group’s office and talked to numerous ladies about hair loss and the different types of headwear available after she lost her own hair.
Miss Groombridge also put her artistic talents to good use and created friendship bracelets which she sold to make cash for the charity.
Deborah Roberts, Cancer Connections’ co-founder, has been so touched by her dedication she’s nominated Rachel as Role Model of The Year in our Pride of South Tyneside Awards.
She said: “Rachel never gives up, never complains. She really is a true inspiration to everyone around her.”
Miss Groombridge, who is now resitting her GCSEs to gain better marks, is delighted to have been nominated.
She added: “I’m quite surprised, but it’s very lovely to have been put forward.”
