A CANCER sufferer has raised £1,000 as a thank you to a charity which helped her through her darkest times.
Leona Compton was given something to fight for when she found out she was going to be a gran just 24 hours after receiving the devastating news that she had breast cancer.
Thanks to South Shields-based Cancer Connections, she is now looking forward to the future with new-found optimism and seeing her new grand-daughter Grace grow up. Leona finished her chemo and radiotherapy recently and is feeling far more positive about her prospects.
She said: “Cancer Connections has really helped support me in dealing with the cancer. The group has given me so much structure. I was poorly during the chemotherapy and it was there. I just wanted to give something back.”
Leona, who is manager at the Dicksons butcher’s shop in Boldon Lane, South Shields, roped in staff from the chain’s stores in the borough to raise cash for the charity’s ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal.
“I sent a letter to the other shops to see if they would be willing to raise some money for the charity. I’d just like to thanks Michael and Christine Dickson and all the other Dicksons shops.”
Charity co-founder Deborah Roberts said: “We are absolutely thrilled and very grateful to Dicksons and all the staff who contributed. This is a great example of local businesses coming on board to support our work with cancer patients’ families and carers.”
