Staff from the South Shields ASDA Ocean Road store helped net £1,801.01 in a charity netball match in aid of Cancer Connections. They took on a team whose players got together after more than 30 years off the court. A charity night was also held to boost the funds for South Tyneside charity Cancer Connections.
The fundraising was in memory of Maureen Turnbull, who died in July after battling cancer for many years. The 57-year-old was part of the Hearns team, which played during the 1960s and 1970s at Redwell School, in South Shields. The team got back together especially for the event – and despite all those years away still managed to win.
As well as taking part in the match, Asda staff also handed over £500 from the Asda Foundation towards their total.
Organiser Fran Manson, who works at the supermarket, and Lynda Lamb, who also helped organise the fundraising efforts said “Maureen would have been proud of what we have managed to achieve”.
