Dame Margaret Barbour DBE officially opened Cancer Connections’ premises on Monday July 18th 2011.
This special occasion marked the achievement of one of the main objectives of the charity, to “buy a little house, round the corner, nothing medical about it, cosy, with a garden, a ‘home from home’ where people could call in any time and find a friendly welcome and help from people who understand”.
Welcoming guests to Cancer Connections the Chairman explained:
“Over 900 individuals and organisations have contributed donations specifically towards the purchase of our new home, local businesses have given in kind, and there have been the many hundreds more who joined in fundraising events. To all these people we say a very big “Thank you”.
“Today we celebrate the opening of a building but I hope it is obvious that this charity is very much more than that. At its centre are people who have experienced cancer who are willing and able, and prepared to give their time, to help others who find themselves in a similar situation.”
Dame Margaret is Chair of the local company J Barbour & Sons and the Barbour Charitable Trust that has been very generous in its support of Cancer Connections. After looking round the house and talking with visitors, volunteers and staff she concluded:
“This home will give people an enormous feeling of calm, tranquility and hope”
